Learning Disabilities: Perspective Taking - Lunch and Learn Summer series Michelle AuCoin

In this highly engaging session 1, “Learning Disabilities: Perspective Taking” the employer takes on the perspective of the employee with a disability. Whether you participate or observe (no pressure), you will gain respect and a clear understanding of employees impacted by barriers to learning.

The first session is person-centred. Here’s what you will learn:

  • Simulations to experience what it’s like to have a learning disability
  • Profile of learning disabilities: myths and realizations
  • Individual experiences and needs of those with learning disabilities
  • Disclosure of learning disabilities and comorbid conditions
  • Impact of learning disabilities on job performance
  • Mislabeling and misunderstanding of performance issues
  • Strategies to support employees who may not disclose their learning disabilities but show symptoms
  • Self-accommodation and disclosure for employers with learning disabilities
  • Impact of learning disabilities on leadership and business

Meet the presenter

Michelle_AucoinMichelle AuCoin

Michelle AuCoin is the Founder and President of LearnAbility Educational Solutions (since 2005). Michelle and her team have taught thousands of students for decades, specializing in Learning Disabilities. A 28 year veteran of education, Michelle completed her Bachelor of Arts in Communication and has a Master’s in Education Major in Special Education. Michelle is the 2022 Winner of the Businessperson of the Year Award for the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Community Votes award for 2022 and 2023, the Next Gen Vital Employer Excellence Award in 2021, the CB Chamber of Commerce Professional Services award in 2013, and the Businesswoman award for ECBC, 2012. Michelle is currently on the National Committee for the development of the PACFOLD project with the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada. Michelle previously worked on multiple initiatives with the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada, including being a contributor on the National manual: A Roadmap on LD for Employers.
